Rooms

You might be limited by the number of rooms in your home, but it is what you do with the rooms that count. You have the ability to bring life and energy into any room.

Think about how the room will be used; what is the purpose of each room. Can the room be reconfigured to meet your needs and create the feeling you desire?

Sometimes opening up a space can give the feeling of much more physical space than is actually available. This can be accomplished by:

  • Removing a barrier such as hanging cupboards
  • Removing a wall or part of a wall*
  • Rearranging the furniture to remove barriers

*Note: Be very careful the wall you are removing or renovating is not a load bearing wall. Removing a load bearing wall without installing proper supports can result in structural damage, or an overhead room collapsing into the space below. Always bring in qualified person(s) to determine safety issues, structural challenges, plumbing and electrical questions.

You are looking for flow, continuity, and practicality. The rooms must reflect your lifestyle and needs. The requirements are very different for a home with children than a home without children. The age of your family is also a major consideration, i.e. do you need to have a clear view of where the children are or can they be unsupervised in another area of the home?

Lots to think about...come up with a plan and then talk to friends and family who have a demographic similar to you. Ask the questions of what works and what doesn't work. Better to adjust the plan before the money is invested.
