Choosing colors for interior decor

Choosing your colours is probably the most challenging task. Don't rush this step.

The paint store provides countless options. Many paint distributors offer coordinated colour cards, featuring complimentary colour schemes. Some offer sample size cans of paint allowing you to try it on your wall before committing to the entire room. This option allows you to view the colour at different times of the day.

Be aware that a colour you like on a small paint chip sample may look very different when it covers an entire room. The variables include the lighting in the room to be painted…whether it is natural light, artificial light, and the exposure to the outside. A room that appears one colour in the morning may look very different in the afternoon and evening.

After choosing a pastel yellow for my living room, the paint advisor showed me a room painted in that same colour. I was amazed that the ‘perfect colour' on the paint chip, had a prominent green hue. The colour would not meet my decorating needs.

A basic place to start when choosing colours is with a Colour Wheel. This can be found in the Library, Bookstore, or on the internet. This will identify the science behind decorating.
