Interior Decorating Homes

Decorating the interior of your home begins at the curb.   The feeling you want the inside to evoke must start before you walk through the front door.   The connection you create from the outside to the inside will create the flow.

Do your research.   There is no shortage of design/decorating magazines and books available.   Spend some time at your local library, favourite book store, or interior decorating television show.

Choose a style that you like, and if possible has some longevity. Fads come and go and can be a considerable financial investment if large redecorating must constantly happen.   Add the fad factor using accessory pieces that can be changed for minimal investment.

Connect the interior rooms by creating a flow.   This can be achieved by repeating a colour from one room to the next.   The creative use of paint, furniture and accessories will accomplish this.

Choose a colour scheme that reflects a pleasant feeling or memory.   For example, the last house I decorated, I decided to use mainly pastels on the main floor.   The feeling I wanted to create was one of tranquility and calm.   As I walked through my living space, one room linked to the next using colour.

Accessories in stronger colours and fabrics added interest and energy to the space.   Cushions and art brought punches of colour.

The lower level was my home office/work space.   The design effect throughout this area reflected high energy, providing inspiration while I worked.

The upper level was more serene to bring a restful end to each day.   The pastels from the main floor were softened even more for the sleeping level.   It was my oasis and getaway.

Most of all have fun with it. Ask the opinion of others, but remember you have to live with it. The final decision should be yours. I once had a friend who suggested I decorate my front hall with fish images. I asked if she would do that in her own home and she said she would not, but thought it would be ‘funky'. That was not the feeling I was looking for.   My son is afraid of fish, and I would be creating an anxious situation for him every time he walked into our home…a place that should be a place of security for the family.

If you are not sure of how to proceed, there are professional interior designers who can either help you in the planning stages in a consultant role, or manage the project to complete the work.

Have fun and good luck decorating the interior of your home.   There is a real feeling of satisfaction when you make it your own.
