Valance - When to add a Valance
A valance can be installed for a number of reasons. A
valance is sometimes used when there is no space for drapes, or you want to
finish off the top of the drapes by putting up a valance. A valance can be made
from drapery fabric, or it can be made out of wallboard and painted to the same
color as the wall.
I've seen a wooden valance covered in a fabric complementary
to the rest of the room, and affixed above the window using ‘L' brackets. It
looked quite stunning and tied the entire room together.
Using a valance is appropriate when privacy is not an issue,
controlling the sun is not necessary, and you simply want to give a finished
look to a window.
